Reflection

In the blink of an eye, it is the end of the trimester. Before the course, I felt that Technical Communication was not important but after the trimester I changed my views on it. As a future engineer, Technical Communication is very important. Engineers have to present their ideas, in an understandable, convincing and professional manner, and Technical Communication covers all of them.

Throughout the trimester there were many takeaways, I learnt how to write product descriptions and summaries, how to paraphrase and summarise from sources to avoid plagiarism.

In this module, I understood that peer reviews and writing feedbacks are important factors in improving our language. Peer reviews allows us to come across many mistakes that students, including myself, make. Writing feedbacks also plays a part in learning. Feedbacks should be constructive so that the team receiving them will be able to improve themselves and aim not make the same mistake again.

Understanding how to write proposals and present them was one of the takeaways as well. A proposal comprises of many sections some being the problem and purpose statement, benefits, and evaluation. Proposals must be clear and concise for others to understand and evaluate if they would want to accept it. The presentation also plays an important part in convincing others to accept the proposed.

Overall, I enjoyed the course. I feel that I have learnt a lot from this module. It has enriched my knowledge, and encouraged the working with different people in the course by randomising teams. Throughout the course, I learnt that teamwork play an important role in getting jobs done. The course also allowed me to interact and know some of the course mates better.

Thank you for the wonderful experience, Brad!

Executive Summary

This proposal discusses about the current Geotab GO7 and how it can be improved through some modifications as well as the benefits of the implementations.

Research have been made and it was identified that the current Geotab GO7 is lacking of some functionality. To work on the problem of the lack of functionalities, this report proposes to modify the current Geotab GO7 to better serve the needs of the fleet companies and fleet drivers.

The drawback in the implementation of the modified Geotab GO7 can be identified in the evaluation of the product. In conclusion, this proposal aims to convince the Geotab stakeholders that the implementation is needed to increase the fleet efficiency and sales of the Geotab GO7.

Dear Mr. Blackstone,

RE: Proposal for improvement on current Geotab GO7

In reference to the authorization letter, the team is delighted to have the opportunity to present to you the solution on how to dramatically improve the Geotab GO7.

Our team has evaluated that there are several functionalities in the current Geotab GO7 which can be improved on to possibly reduce the number of accidents on the roads. Distracted driving is the primary cause of most road accidents and GPS tracking cameras have been effective in helping drivers avoid objects by giving the full view of what is happening outside the car. In the Annual Road Traffic Situation 2015 report, the number of casualties has increased from 4,634 to 4,875 in 2014 to 2015. The enhancement of Geotab GO7 can be valuable to eliminate issues of distracted driving and will efficiently reduce the number of road accidents in Singapore.

We thank you for your time and effort to read our proposal, it is greatly appreciated. We hope that you will consider implementing our ideas as it will a great benefit for road users.

Yours sincerely,

Hoe Xin En

Product Description Summary/Analysis Draft 3

Garmin's product description page introduces the GPS device's features and functionality which shows why Garmin is the product to get, "All in one, Garmin is the ONE". NUVI, an in-car-GPS device developed by Garmin, provides detailed maps and directions to places of interest that comes with complimentary lifetime updates. Voice activated navigation, wifi and bluetooth are built in to allow users to navigate and answer calls safely hands-free.

NUVI allows users to tell them the full address before navigation, replies interactively to remind users that their hands can remain safely on the wheel. It also comes with a magnetic cradle that charges device when plugged in. An integrated driving recorder backups indisputable evidence in the event of accidents that can be viewed on a laptop.

Nuvi 4592 LM allows rerouting of path on-the-go, diverting the driver away from traffic, avoiding specific routes/tolls, sorts multiple destinations. It also has unique features such as predicting the driver’s favourite route (myTrends) and can even suggest eco-friendly routes (ecoRoute).

In TomTom’s product review page, it tells us about what to expect from the product, its functionalities and bugs. TomTom GO Live 1535M, a product developed by TomTom, provides several location searching applications such as Yelp, Expedia, Trip Advisor and Google. GO Live 1535M is also integrated with voice activated navigation and Bluetooth but there is no Wi-fi. The preview of traffic, fuel and speed cameras along the route are also integrated in the maps.

GO Live 1535M is able to recommend places of interests determined by home address, destination of the current route or city of choice. Setting destinations are also made easier with voice commands. GO Live 1535M is also capable of posting tweets on Twitter, with a touch of a button, to allow others to know your location and the estimated time of arrival. TomTom also links the GPS to a mobile application, MyDrive, which allows consumers to access their GPS.

Although they are similar in several ways, the differences between the Nuvi 4592 LM and TomTom GO Live 1535M are clear. Some differences would be that the Nuvi product has lifetime updates, built in wifi, and is able to divert drivers away from traffic or routes/tolls while The TomTom product is built in with several location searching applications and can be controlled with a mobile application and is able to post tweets.

Singaporeans spend an average of 9 hours a week, based on a survey done by research agency 2CV and motor insurance company DirectAsia. With Nuvi 4592 LM’s ability to divert drivers away from traffic or routes/tolls, it would be a better product compared to the TomTom GO 1535M.

In comparison, Nuvi has more components compared to GO Live with Wifi being the most obvious difference.  Also, Nuvi has more useful functions than the GO Live as it allows hands-free navigation and phone calls while GO Live only voice commands for the setting of locations. Therefore, with the two points I feel that Nuvi has a better product than that of TomTom.
